Paint Test

Contrary to a lot of internet rumors and gossip neither 100LL nor G100UL® avgas strip aircraft painted surfaces, as demonstrated by the hard data, below.

These are three Bonanza side louvre cowling panels. Removed and replaced with newly manufactured parts as part of the TAT turbo system. These were typically last painted over 20 years ago. We picked the one in the "worst" "native" (as removed) condition to be soaked in G100UL avgas. The scratches on the surface were present before soaking. As of 12/28/2024 these panels had been soaking for seven days.

We have made available a timelapse video of this test. There is no detectable change in the paint for any of these three panels. When we have the time, we will post up the "before" photographs. Please feel free to ask any questions regarding these experiments. We will endeavor to provide timely responses.

We have since performed additional testing on a Bonanza side louvre cowling panel, similarly sourced from a TAT turbo system installation procedure. This latest test was a ten day drip, evaporate, drip, method.

A narrated video of this test is available here. Below you can see images of the test panel.
